As trade rumours and speculation grow over players’ futures beyond 2022, the ever unique ruck role in our game continues to be a point of discussion in each and every offseason, as clubs look to rejig their midfield combination.

So far throughout this year, Luke Jackson and Brodie Grundy are two names that have headlined many talking points as potential movements once the season is complete, while a smattering of back-up ruckmen look for more opportunity.

So lets take a look at the potential ruck merry-go-round that is bound to happen ahead of the 2023 season:

Jackson has officially requested a trade to Western Australia, with Fremantle believed to be the frontrunners despite West Coast potentially having the capability to do broker a trade.

Journalist Sam McClure believes that the 20-year-old has “basically committed to them on a long-term deal, which I believe to be seven years.”

As a potential result of this, Melbourne will now look to bolster their ruck stocks, as coach Simon Goodwin has declared that a two-ruck lineup is something the club desires.

Whilst this has occurred, Collingwood has found themselves with their fingers in many pies, looking to acquire Brisbane’s Daniel McStay, GWS’ Bobby Hill and Adelaide’s Billy Frampton.

In an attempt to balance out their list, the club has looked at offing some of their major salary cap players, which has included Brodie Grundy and Jordan De Goey.

The latter is set to stay at the AIA Centre, while Grundy looks bound to join the Demons for the beginning of 2023, despite his contract expiring at the end of 2027, to help ease the financial stress the Pies are under.

Taking another look at the Dockers, Jackson’s imminent arrival has depth-ruckman Lloyd Meek starting to look at opportunities elsewhere, with Melbourne, West Coast and GWS all signalling their interest, according to Fox Sports.

Meek has only managed 15 games in the past two seasons and has struggled to replace Sean Darcy and Rory Lobb in the senior side.

Rory Lobb is also another ruck/forward who looks to be on the move, with the versatile tall setting his sights on a Victorian club, namely the Western Bulldogs.

Now entering the conversation is the Giants, who’ve lacked a genuine ruck presence in 2022, despite the efforts of Braydon Preuss and Kieran Briggs.

With players Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper both set to request a trade to Richmond, the Giants have starting piecing together what a deal might look like, with the Herald Sun flagging Canberra-local Ivan Soldo to help broker the trade.

Soldo looks to have taken second-fiddle to captain Toby Nankervis, while Noah Balta and Ben Miller have proven their ability to play in multiple positions.

The 26-year-old is to be believed to want more opportunities, with the vacancy at the Giants looking like a potential option.

Other names that have been chucked into the mix is North Melbourne veteran Todd Goldstein, who looked like requesting a trade to a rival club before the arrival of coaching guru Alastair Clarkson.

While Essendon youngster Nick Bryan also seems to be attracting interest, reported by Zero Hanger.

So with plenty of names already chucked around, safe to say that one move could unlock many more.
