Australian star Glenn Maxwell has backed T20 captain Aaron Finch to find his best for the World Cup defence after removing the pressure of his one-day role.

Finch, Maxwell’s former housemate and long-time teammate, retired from 50-over cricket last Sunday following a form slump that included failing to reach double digits in his final six ODI innings.

But wearing the new Indigenous-themed kit the defending champs will wear when the World Cup begins in November, Maxwell was adamant the captain had some runs left in him.

Maxwell also said Finch’s value as a captain could not be understated as the Aussies look to go back-to-back.

“Once he gets out on the field and takes control of the team out there, he‘s been able to focus on the job at hand really well and that’s a credit to him,” Maxwell said at the SCG.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the easiest time for him in one-day cricket, but his attitude has never changed.

“He was brilliant with the strategy side of thing. It’s a very underrated thing in T20.

“Don’t discount his value as captain.”

The Australians will wear a uniform inspired by cricket’s connection to First Nations people and culture when they defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil.

The new kit, Australia’s first uniform to feature a First Nations design at a cricket World Cup, also incorporates the colours of the Aboriginal flag and Torres Strait Islander flag.

“We are very proud to be wearing a First Nations themed kit for the upcoming T20 World Cup and to also be the first cricket team to do so at a world event,” Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc said.

“The First XI team is an important part of cricket’s history and we are honoured that through this kit we will share their story and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures on the world stage.”

Australia begins its World Cup defence against New Zealand at the SCG on October 22.
