Brenton Avdulla off the bench to ride Eduardo in The Shorts

Star jockey Brenton Avdulla will play the role of super sub again on gun sprinter Eduardo in Saturday’s $1m The Shorts but he takes confidence in the knowledge he’s on “one of the best sprinters we’ve got”.

Eduardo will look to back up his stellar first-up win in the Concorde Stakes (1000m) in the race dubbed the “mini Everest” at Randwick this weekend.

Avdulla got the call up to pilot Joe Pride’s star sprinter after regular jockey Nash Rawiller picked up a pair of careless riding bans on San Domenico Stakes day last month.

Rawiller missed last Saturday’s meeting and will miss Group 1 George Main Stakes day card before returning in time for Golden Rose day.

It was 17 months ago when a careless riding ban to Rawiller afforded Avdulla a similar opportunity to pilot Eduardo in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes.

The pair finished third in Sydney’s autumn sprint showpiece, won by Nature Strip.

“I have sat on him a few times and was even on him before he went to Queensland and won the Group 1,” Avdulla said.

“I obviously have a good working relationship with Joe and I know the horse so I am looking forward to riding him again.

“It is obviously going to be a little mini-Everest, a hot race and I expect him to run well.”

Six slot-holders in The Everest are likely to line up in The Shorts (1100m) with Eduardo joined by defending champion Nature Strip, 2021 runner up Masked Crusader, 2020 winner Classique Legend as well as Mazu and Lost And Running.

Then there are The Everest hopefuls likes Overpass, which will look to stake his claim for the lucrative sprint on the weekend.

It’s set to be a mouth-watering selection of sprinters but nothing that Eduardo hasn’t faced before.

“He is obviously one of the best sprinters we’ve got,” Avdulla said.

“Joe will have him peaking for a months time but you’d still expect him to go there on Saturday and be very, very competitive.”

Eduardo ($3.50) is only narrowly shaded in TAB all-in betting by his old sparring partner Nature Strip, who holds top billing at $2.50.

Mazu, winner of the Doomben 10,000 is $4.50 while Classique Legend and Lost And Running are both rated $9 chances.
