Australian cricketer Cameron Green has been tipped to “break the bank” at next year’s Indian Premier League Auction, and the young gun has the perfect opportunity to inflate his base price in the sub-continent this week.

Ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup campaign in Australia, Aaron Finch’s men will take on powerhouse nation India in a three-match bilateral series on foreign soil.

Green, who made his T20I debut against Pakistan in Lahore earlier this year, was added to the Australian squad after veteran opener David Warner withdrew from the tour due to workload management.

And injury setbacks for incumbent all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh mean the West Australian prodigy will almost certainly feature in Tuesday evening’s series opener in Mohali.

The tall all-rounder provided a glimpse at his white-ball potential during Australia’s recent one-day series in regional Queensland, taking 10 wickets at 11.50 in five matches against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

And an unbeaten 25 off 12 balls in the third ODI against the Black Caps in Cairns proved he is more than capable of clearing the boundary rope with ease when required.

If Green can replicate this explosive form in front of Indian audiences this week, it certainly won’t harm his chances of pocketing a seven-figure sum in the next IPL Auction.

“I think I’m surprised by Greeny every time he plays really … his bowling just goes from strength to strength every time he ties the boots up,” Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood told reporters at the SCG on Wednesday.

“With a couple of guys out injured at the moment, it’s probably a good opportunity to get him in a couple of games. Mitch Marsh and Stoinis are injured, so he could slide in and maybe take one of those roles for this tour.”

Marsh is adamant he will recover from his ankle injury before the T20 World Cup title defence kicks off in October, but Green would be his West Australian teammate’s logical replacement if required.

Speaking to reporters in a teleconference from Mohali, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins praised Green’s versatility with the bat.

“I just look forward to him playing with freedom, taking the game on,” he said.

“He learns pretty quickly and gets up to speed right away.

“He’s just a class player at a young age. I think his ability to bat almost anywhere in the order so early in his career is a huge plus.”

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin predicted that IPL franchises would scramble over Green, complimenting the 23-year-old’s ability to sweep spinners.

“Just when everyone thought how he would do in the one-day format, he is showing his big-hitting prowess,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel this week.

“He is striking them big. He has his sweep shot against the spinners. He has the long hits as well. He is a tall fast bowler too.

“Some (IPL) teams might think of using him in the Powerplay and might go after him in this year’s auctions unless and until he pulls out. I am sure some team will break the bank for him in this year’s auctions.”

Last month, Green penned a deal with the Perth Scorchers to revive his Big Bash League career; he is expected to be available for the club’s final six matches of the regular season following the New Year’s Test against South Africa in Sydney.

The timing again works in Green’s favour, with the IPL Auction expected to take place not long after the BBL’s conclusion.

Scorchers teammate Jhye Richardson was picked up by the Punjab Kings for AU$2.48 million last year after finishing Big Bash League’s 10th edition as the highest wicket-taker.

The first T20 between India and Australia gets underway at Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium on Tuesday evening, with the first ball scheduled for midnight AEST.
