Oftentimes, a boxer knows when to hang up his gloves for good. Sometimes, it happens too late in his career. But when a fighter can control the narrative and get it right, he can leave the sport on a high note.

Is that the case for Gennadiy Golovkin?

Golovkin, 40, lost to Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 17 via unanimous decision in a trilogy fight for the ages. This was the first time Golovkin, the IBF, IBO, and WBA middleweight champion, moved up in weight. He fought Canelo for super middleweight gold in this fight. Canelo now leads the series 2-0-1.

So, what does the future hold for Golovkin? The Sporting News takes a look.

Will Gennadiy Golovkin retire following his trilogy fight vs. Canelo Alvarez?

Since their second fight in 2018, Canelo has gone 9-1 and won gold at light heavyweight and super middleweight. Canelo became undisputed super middleweight champion in less than 11 months.

Golovkin signed a six-fight contract with DAZN after that fight, but he has only competed in five bouts because of injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic. His fight with Ryota Murata in April, which Golovkin won via TKO, was delayed multiple times. The preparation for a bout can take a toll on the body, especially if one must do it several times.

He did say that the Canelo fight would be the last one under his DAZN deal.

Golovkin did not consider retirement when he spoke with The Sun in December 2021. Last June, he said “not yet” when TMZ Sports asked him about retiring after the Canelo fight.

At the pre-fight media scrum, Golovkin dispelled rumors surrounding his career He said that if offers were on the table for any fight, including a fourth with Canelo, he would be interested.

“I have certain plans, without any doubt, regardless of the outcome of this fight. Whether it’s going to be a draw and the fourth fight is going to be offered, I would say ‘Why not?’ You should not forget that I have three belts at 160. . . . I retired three years ago, before the pandemic. Right now, I stay here,” he said.

After the fight with Canelo, Golovkin once again denied that he was retiring. He has his sights set on defending middleweight gold and traveling all over the world.

It is unknown what his next move will be or whom he will fight next.
