Spring over for Cox Plate fancy Western Empire

The spring carnival of highly-touted Group 1 winner Western Empire is over.

He has been sent home to Western Australia after a lacklustre run in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

The five-year-old travelled across to Victoria with high hopes but has disappointed in his two runs in the Memsie Stakes and Makybe Diva for trainer Danny O’Brien.

At one stage, the Railway Stakes winner was close to favourite for the Cox Plate.

Owner Bob Peters announced today that Western Empire, Regal Power and Stageman would all return home after disappointing campaigns.

Western Empire ran 5th in the Memsie beaten 3.6 lengths but regressed on Saturday, running 5th again but was beaten more than six lengths.

Peters’ star galloper Showmanship will run in Saturday’s Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.
